Our theme this week was Music and Musicians.
- We continued talking about dependability, and the companion character trait of Loyalty – “Being consistent in my thoughts and actions toward those that I love.” Or least, I tried to talk about loyalty. But for some reason the kids were so tickled at the sound of the word “loyalty”, they giggled so much that I couldn’t even explain to them what it meant. I was not amused.
- We learned Psalm 149:1 “Praise the Lord. Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise in the assembly of the saints.”
Our book list included:
- Little Bear by Else Minarik – I’m not sure what this had to do with music or musicians, but the kids did enjoy it and request it a lot. There are 4 or 5 short stories about the adventures of a young bear named Little Bear, somewhat in the style of Frog and Toad.
- Old MacDonald Had a Farm – this was a “Play-a-Song” book that has buttons to press to hear the sounds of the different animals as you sing the song. Except, I guess our batteries don’t work. But I did sing the entire song (with about 10 different animals) before nap time once.
- Dance at Grandpa’s by Laura Ingalls Wilder – another adaptation of a story from “Little House in the Big Woods” about going for a sleigh ride through the woods to Grandpa’s house where they had a big party with lots of fiddle music and dancing and food.
- A Little Schubert by M.B. Goffstein – a brief biography of the classical music composer Franz Schubert in Austria.
- Lentil by Robert McCloskey -- a story about a boy named Lentil who wanted to make music, but couldn’t sing at all. He took up the harmonica and ended up leading the parade for the town’s welcome home celebration for the famous Colonel Carter. One of the week’s favorites.
- Over in the Meadow by John Langstaff – an nicely illustrated version of the song “Over in the Meadow”. Includes the musical score, so we got to learn a new song (new to us, anyway). Good counting book too. Another often requested book.
Activities this week:
We didn’t do too much this week, other than read/sing the books. But in another example of God’s perfect timing, our Davis cousins had their concert for their home school music co-op on Friday, December 11. We went down to Galveston Bible Church to hear them sing. Then since it was very late when we left Galveston, we dressed all the kids in pajamas and tucked them in under blankets for the ride home (just like Laura, Mary and Carrie did in “Dance at Grandpa’s”).
Jenna singing (right in the middle)…
Susannah singing (far right)…
Marian and Nathan clapping…
My boys keeping Grandpa’s lap warm….
